Far-right Russian philosopher suggests removing Lenin from Moscow mausoleum, to make room for Putin

Alexander Dugin compared the Russian dictator to an emperor.

A prominent ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin has suggested removing Vladimir Lenin’s body from its mausoleum in Moscow’s Red Square, a move aimed at solidifying Putin’s legacy as Russia’s modern-day "Emperor."

Alexander Dugin, a far-right political philosopher whose ideology about Greater Russia have shaped Putin’s policies over the past two decades, advised the Kremlin leader to relocate Lenin’s remains in order to make space for his own eventual burial.

The pro-Kremlin Telegram channel Kremlin Secrets reports that Dugin, a staunch supporter of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, suggests redesigning the mausoleum to reflect Putin’s historical significance. He proposed decorating the structure with military trophies from Russia’s ongoing "special military operation" and preparing it as a future site of worship for Putin’s achievements.

"Why not make room there for the real Emperor?" Dugin reportedly told Putin, according to the Telegram post.

Dugin’s proposal underscores the ongoing debate over Lenin’s century-long presence in the mausoleum, a topic that has divided Russian society for decades. While some view Lenin – the founder of the now defunct Soviet Union, as a symbol of the Bolshevik imperial past, others argue that his body should be buried to reflect modern Russia’s identity.

The Kremlin has reportedly acknowledged receiving Dugin’s proposal but has not commented on its feasibility. Putin earlier said Lenin’s body should remain in the mausoleum for as long as the older generations maintained an emotional and historical bond with the Bolshevik leader.

Lenin’s embalmed body has remained in the Red Square for 100 years, since 1924.

Dugin, who has been sanctioned by the U.S. and the E.U. for his role in promoting Russia’s aggressive foreign policy, has long advocated for a more imperial vision of Russia.

In August 2022, Dugin’s daughter Darya was killed in a car bombing outside Moscow in what looks like an assassination plot against her father or both.
