[video] Swiss train breaks record for longest continuous journey by hydrogen-powered train


FLIRT-H2 traveled 2,803 kilometers during 46 consecutive hours in Colorado last March.

A hydrogen-powered train made in Switzerland by Stadler hit a new world record on 20 March 2024 for the longest continuous journey by a passenger train running on hydrogen fuel.

The model FLIRT-H2 traveled to the ENSCO test track in Pueblo, Colorado, U.S., for 46 consecutive hours, covering an astonishing distance of 2,803 kilometers (1,741.7 miles) without the need for refueling or recharging.

Stadler, renowned for its excellence in train manufacturing for over 80 years, now adds another accolade to its repertoire, having previously secured a Guinness World Record for alternative propulsion with the FLIRT Akku, in December 2021.

This latest achievement underscores Stadler's commitment to innovation and sustainable transportation solutions, the company said in a press release

The two-car FLIRT-H2, custom-built for the San Bernadino County Transportation Authority in California, can accommodate 108 passengers and attains a top speed of 130 km/h (79 mph). Its innovative design incorporates hydrogen fuel tanks between the passenger cars, facilitating the conversion of hydrogen into electricity via fuel cells. This electricity powers the train's drive system through batteries, with additional energy recuperated from braking.

The Transport Authority of California has ordered four FLIRT-H2 trains from the Swiss manufacturer. Stadler has also delivered its trains to operators in Germany, Austria, Italy, and Lithuania. And Switzerland, of course.
