The “Call-of-Duty” style shooter has attracted funding for the development of an in-game marketplace and tools for creators.

The Seattle-based Neon Machine has has raised 20 million US dollars in Series A financing for the upgrading and promotion of “Shrapnel”, a Call-of-Duty-style shooting game that is expected to be released next December. 

The funding round has been secured by Polychain Capital, Griffin Gaming Partners, Brevan Howard Digital, Franklin Templeton, IOSG Ventures, and Tess Ventures, following the 2021 seed round that netted 10.5 million dollars.

“Shrapnel”, a first-person multi-player game akin to the wildly popular Call of Duty gaming franchise, will launched on a blockchain platform - first for paid players using Shrap tokens, but next year it will be also available as a free-to-play version for the general public. 

Shrap tokens are ERC-20 tokens created on the Avalanche C-chain, brought to the Shrapnel subnet for use.

Three billion Shrap was generated as of early May 2023.

The use of blockchain technology allows players to claim ownership of their creations. One of the key features is the expected Shrapnel Marketplace, where in-game items will be purchasable and tradable both for native tokens and fiat money, as well as further developing its creator tools for players to build in-game items. This includes but is not limited to callsigns, insignias, skins, maps and vanities.

Players can sell, auction, or retain ownership their creations.

The team developing "Shrapnel" has worked on games for high-profile brands such as Halo, Call of Duty and Star Wars. It is behind such notable franchises as NFL, Bioshock, Destiny, Hawken, Skylanders, Westworld, and over 30 more titles.

The studio is also working to deliver such games as Illuvium and Star Atlas.
